Rivet and Sway Review

I've worn glasses off and on since I was in the fifth grade.  Thanks to Rivet and Sway, I'm wearing them all the time now.  But before now?  Yep, off and on.  I had glasses for awhile because I thought they were cool - nifty cotton candy pink ones, if I recall correctly.  Then I didn't wear them for awhile, and eventually I got contacts around high school.

I'd wear them sometimes but not all the time because I'm that odd person who has one near sighted eye and one far sighted eye.  It sort of balances out, so I can get away with not wearing them.  Periodically, I'll get a new prescription and glasses, but I think the last time I did was almost three years ago.  Remember when I wrote about losing my sunglasses not too long after getting them and miraculously finding them a year and a half later?  Yeah.

When I was offered the chance to be a Rivet and Sway Original at BlogHer and get some new, fashionable glasses, I was all over it.  Rivet and Sway is different from my local optometrist in that the glasses are mail order.  Yikes, right?  How do you know if you're even going to like them?  And at $199, you'd better like the glasses you're getting.  Rivet and Sway has figured out the answers to all this.

First, you can order try on kits with blank lenses so you can try on up to three different eyeglasses at a time at home for free.  With the oh so awesome tool on the website that helps you select the right lenses for your face - including both your face shape and whether you need narrow or wide frames for your head - you've got a pretty good shot at success right there.

I ordered my three frames, and they arrived two days later via FedEx.  I loved not having to wait a long time.  Rivet and Sway estimates that the whole process takes 13 days from start to finish if you order your glasses the third day you have your try on pairs, and that's not bad!  I loved the packaging the frames arrived in, and I appreciated knowing that any glasses I ordered would arrive safe and sound.

Everything Rivet and Sway has a personal touch to it

I have to admit the glasses were a lot nicer than the ones I had to choose from the last time I bought glasses.  The Je Ne Sais Quoi lenses were unfortunately not a good fit for my head, but I took the other two pairs on the rounds with my friends to get their opinions.  What do you think?

My three Rivet and Sway pairs - which do you like best?

I will be honest that I liked the middle pair's shape the best.  The little flair up from the middle was great, but the color wasn't quite right.  While most glasses - including the Tusk- offer multiple frame colors, the black and white or galapagos green weren't really a good fit for me personally.  The blue and grey of the "ripcurl" colored The Little Voice glasses - the photo on the right - ultimately won out.

Once I had my glasses chosen, I simply peeled off the preprinted postage paid return sticker and resealed the box the glasses arrived in - a matter of merely pulling off the top of a sticky - and stuck them in my mailbox.  I typed in the information from my new prescription, something this review opportunity inspired me to do, and waited for my glasses to arrive.  I was lucky that my optometrist gave me a very clearly written prescription that had everything I needed.  If I needed help, I could have either scanned my prescription for Rivet and Sway or had them contact my optometrist directly.  Can you say convenient?

The only downside is that some frames only accept prescriptions up to a certain level.  If you have a stronger prescription, make sure the glasses you order will work with your prescription - fortunately not an issue for me.  At this point, Rivet and Sway doesn't offer progressive or bifocal lenses, either, which is somewhat limiting.  The other thing I'd love to see offered that they don't currently provide is prescription sunglasses.  I have very sensitive eyes and cannot go outside even on a cloudy day without them.

As for my specific experience, the glasses arrived in the same style of very cute cardboard box used for the try on pairs.  Inside was also a little bag to keep my glasses safe and unscratched, which I appreciate.  When I tried on my glasses, even just the little change in my prescription was apparent.  I loved the glasses.  And so has everyone else.  I've gotten more compliments on my new glasses than I ever dreamed I would, from the friends who knew they were new to the owner of the tae kwon do dojo where Mister Man goes.

My Rivet and Sway glasses rock

The glasses are a high quality, which I would expect for $199 (including shipping and lenses).  They are polycarbonate lenses, with scratch resistant and glare free 100% UV protection coatings.  That results in thin and lightweight lenses, making them easier to wear.

I have had my glasses adjusted slightly, which is something my local optometrist can easily do (you can see them sliding down my nose a bit in the picture above).  They fit beautifully, and I love them.  Even if that weren't the case, all is not lost.  Rivet and Sway will allow you to return your glasses or any reason in the first 60 days and either credit your card or send you a new pair.  How can you possibly lose?

I can make it a little more tempting for you, actually.  I have a code that will give you 20% off a pair of Rivet and Sway glasses.  Note that the code expires on August 26, 2012, so get your act in gear.  You can order your try on pairs now and get your prescription together at a later date, as you need that only to order your final pair.

Discount code for 20% off Rivet and Sway: CWHOUB017D894C

C'mon, you know you need new glasses right?  Did you know your prescription expires after two years?  And that it's recommended that you get your eyes tested every year?  Which pair(s) would you choose?

In the interest of full disclosure, I received a pair of Rivet and Sway glasses for review purposes.  I was not compensated as part of this campaign.  As always, all opinions expressed remain my own.

Review: Cheryl's Cookies

Can you believe that Easter is coming up already? And soon after that, spring will truly be here, and then school will be out. I already have a lot of gifts I need to plan - and of course all of them are for people who don't really "need" anything, the family I'm visiting, end of year teacher gifts, and the like. For those occasions, I really love giving food or wine because it's something that truly is just for the recipient and something that they frequently wouldn't buy for themselves.

Have you ever sent Cheryl's Cookies for an occasion like this? I was first introduced to Cheryl's over a year ago when I visited their factory and got to sample some first hand. When I told a friend about the treats I'd had, she was enormously jealous, as she is from Columbus, OH where Cheryl's was founded and is very well known - for good reason!

Cheryl's makes all sorts of delicious baked goods from beautifully decorated cookies to decadent brownies and more. Each item comes individually wrapped, so it stays perfectly fresh, and flavors don't mix when you have multiple types together.

As part of my Easter greetings, I received a Cheryl's Classic Gift Bundle, which includes three boxes, each filled with mini-goodies. One box contains chocolate pretzel clusters and confection pretzel clusters. The next contains an assortment of chocolate chip triple chocolate buttercream frosted cookies, while the last contains Cheryl's famous original buttercream frosting cookies and oatmeal raisin mini-cookies. My tummy says thank you!

I love how the package looks not just professionally put together but so elegant, too. It's something that I love to receive, and I feel good about sending it, too. Each box has a fun and unique design, and you can bet that I save those to use for gift boxes later! Opening each one to discover what's inside is a fun treat, too.

And of course, they taste as good as they look. They are made with "real" ingredients - butter, sugar, eggs, cocoa, honey, cinnamon, and the like. For someone who cares about what she's putting in her body (me), this is the kind of special treat I like to indulge in. And the cookies are always so soft and chewy, much more so than when I make them at home! I had never had the pretzel clusters before, but I really like them. It's a good chocolate with little bites of pretzel inside for a nice crunch. They're less salty than I'd expected them to be, and the pretzel pieces were smaller, but it worked, and everyone in the house who's tried them has asked for more.

A gift of Cheryl's is one of those things that makes a perfect pick-me-up, in my opinion. Cheryl's also offers a $5 Cookie Greeting, which is a buttercream decorated cookie in an adorable little box that is shipped to a recipient for $5. Did I forget to mention that $5 Reward Card toward another purchase that's included with the cookie? How much fun is this to send instead of a greeting card when you want to do something extra special for someone? I love this idea as a little thank you gift for someone who's gone above and beyond or just had a really tough time. Who wouldn't smile at receiving it?

Do you want to try some of Cheryl's deliciousness all for yourself? Right now, Cheryl's is offering a "try me" package ere you can get 6 cookies for free (just pay tax and shipping and handling). You also get a $10 Reward Card to use towards your next Cheryl's order - and c'mon, you know there's going to be a next one, right?

In the interest of full disclosure, I received a sample box from Cheryl's Cookies as described above for review purposes only. I was not compensated for this post. As always, all opinions are my own.

Review: Apothederm Firming Serum

I'm starting to get to that again. You know, the one where you have parties with your friend and they discuss the impact of pulling grey hairs instead of coloring them? If you don't know, good for you. For the rest of us, stick with me here. I've done my best to take care of my skin over the years, but it always feels like there's more I can do. I recently had the opportunity to try out the firming serum from Apothederm which has data from clinical studies showing that it reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles in fourteen days.

The serum is very easy to use, and I love that it doesn't have a scent. For those of us with sensitive (scensitive?) noses, that's huge. There are many products I can't use because they give me a headache. The firming serum is applied morning and night to a clean face before moisturizer. I really like that it isn't greasy. In fact, when I apply it, it feels cooling and absorbs quickly without feeling like it's drying out my skin. When I put my moisturizer atop it, I need less moisturizer than I normally do, which tells me that the serum is doing something.

I haven't noticed that my fine lines (I refuse to admit that I have wrinkles yet) are disappearing yet, but I haven't used it for the full fourteen days yet - and I look at my skin constantly, so it's hard to notice a difference. I do like the way my skin feels, however. And I like that the firming serum comes in a one ounce container, which means I can fly with it in my carry on. That said, the one ounce is a decent size (at a cost of $75) and will last me quite awhile. It takes less than two squirts of the serum to cover my entire face and neck.

Even hours after applying it, my skin still feels smooth and not at all oily, as it frequently does when I just apply my moisturizer. That's a nice benefit in and of itself. And yes, my makeup (I use mineral foundation only) goes on easily and smoothly and requires less buffing to get even coverage than what I normally require. I'm officially a fan.

Ready to try it? Not only does Apothederm offer free ground shipping on all orders over $75, but you can use the code TENOFF that will get you $10 off any order on the Apothederm website now through December 31, 2011. Winter is coming; it's time to take care of your skin!

In the interest of full disclosure, I received a firming serum for review from Apothederm. I was not compensated for this campaign. As always, all opinions expressed remain my own.

Savings For You: eversave

I got back from BlogHer late Monday night, and there is so much to share from there. I loved loved loved it, once again. And yes, before you ask, I will be back for BlogHer in New York in 2012. In fact, I've already purchased my ticket. Ahem.

I love connecting with new brands and learning about products I've not experienced before (and of course the ones I already love). I know I can't possibly post about them all, but I'm going to do my best. One of my favorites was the deal programs out there. I'm already a member of ahem a few programs, and I learned about more while at BlogHer. When I see some good deals coming through, I'll be posting and sharing them here for you.

And it's actually a win win (win). I was asked to sign up to be an affiliate with eversave, for example, which is a new deal site offering deals both online and in local markets. Yay, Chicago was added on Monday! I've already seen some pretty cool deals and wished I lived elsewhere so that I could take advtange of some of them. But no... that's for you instead.

For example, you can get $15 worth of Okabashi sandals and footwear online for $7. They've got some pretty cool sandals because yes, I checked them out. In fact, I have a pair or two coming to my house now.

Best of all, if you're new to eversave, you'll get an instant $2 credit when you sign up. That makes the Okabashi deal just $5 for $15 worth of sandals. You can also use this $2 new member credit on any of our local deals on family activities, dining out, spa treatments and more in cities nationwide. Why not?

Some of my other current favorite deals:

(Valid until August 12)
$15 for a 100% natural mineral makeup kit from Southern Magnolia Minerals ($37 value), plus free shipping!
Offer expires: 11:59 PM - Aug 12, 2011

(Valid until August 11)
$9 for a fiber-rich, all-natural Gnu Foods 7 Bar Sampler with shipping included ($19 value)
Offer expires: 11:59 PM - Aug 11, 2011

(Valid until August 12)
$12 for $25 worth of funky apparel with a big heart from Life is Nutz
Offer expires: 11:59 PM - Aug 12, 2011

(Valid until August 19)
$25 for $50 worth of decorative wall art for kids from ZWalls.com - plus 50% off shipping!
Offer expires: 11:59 PM - Aug 19, 2011

I now want to move to Baltimore (valid until August 12)
$39 for a 60-minute signature facial or $36 for an exfoliating body polish
Offer expires: 11:59 PM - Aug 12, 2011

Because I need to live in Boston to pamper myself this way (valid until August 11)
$35 for a Swedish or deep tissue massage at My Spa 2 in Newton (up to $80 value)
Offer expires: 11:59 PM - Aug 11, 2011

In the interest of full disclosure, I have an affiliate relationship with eversave where I earn a commission for each sale purchased with my links. That said, I am sharing the links that I find worthwhile and interesting because as always, all opinions expressed are my own.

Review: Dot & Ziggy

Last Sunday, Little Miss and I went to the theater. It wasn't the first time we've been to the theater, but it was definitely different from any theater we'd been to in the past.

I was always a little leery of taking Little Miss to the "real" theater until about the last year or so. She doesn't sit still well, and she likes to talk. That and much of theater is too long for her, too. The Chicago Children's Theater is currently presenting Dot & Ziggy, a theater for babies and toddlers and is truly aimed at those as young as six months.

As you enter the Biograph Theater on Lincoln, you can immediately see that this sis not your usual play. There are chairs and tables set up with crayons and coloring pages (that Little Miss happily busied herself with while we waited for the seating to open up), and stroller parking is offered on the opposite side of the lobby. As we were called to the theater by a musician, we arrived in a large room with giant rugs scattered on the floor where we were to sit. Little Miss happily chose her spot, and we cozied down to wait for the play to begin.

I thought the play itself was very cute. It ran only about forty-five minutes, a perfect length for young children. In it, a ladybug (Dot) and a skunk (Ziggy) learned to be friends. It focused on very basic concepts from sharing to up and down or in and out to stripes and dots. There was also some musical accompaniment, and I have to admit that I still have "From stick to stone, I'll follow you home" going through my head nearly a week later.

While Little Miss was definitely on the upper age range at 5 years old, she rather enjoyed it - especially the bubbles at the end - until she read the card about the play and discovered it was for babies and toddlers. Then the grown up little girl announced she wasn't so sure about it. I enjoyed getting up with her and dancing - both the hoky poky that we knew and reaching up to the sky and to the ground in a movement I didn't know previously.

This is a perfect introduction to theater for young children, as it doesn't have too many characters or noises to be overwhelming and is short and accommodates those who need to move around or get up and leave mid performance. I will admit that the $16 pricetag during the week and $18 on weekends is a little steep for such young children to see a relatively short play. That said, tickets do all include discounts or offers to a nearby family-friendly partner restaurant.

The show is running through June 26 at the Victory Biograph Theater on Lincoln in Chicago. The shows are 10am Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, as well as 10am and 12pm on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Use discount code MOMDZ to receive $2 off tickets when purchasing them through the Chicago Children's Theater website.

In the interest of full disclosure, I was provided with tickets to see the show for myself and my daughter. I was not compensated, and all opinions expressed are my own. By posting this, I am eligible to receive tickets to a Chicago Children's Theater production.
